2019 DES Weed Watcher Training on June 1st
WWN will be holding a Weed Watcher training class on June 1st from 9 to 11am in the Community Meeting Room at Franklin Savings Bank, 67 Laconia Rd, Tilton (next to the Tilton Diner). Staff from NHDES will be on hand to instruct volunteers on how to conduct a weed survey, what to look for, and who to contact if there is a problem. You will also receive a binder full of information on the program, details on the most threatening invasives, and a plant identification key for common aquatic plants.
Last year our weed watchers discovered and reported invasive variable milfoil in 5 areas previously undocumented. These locations were then cleaned by divers we had hired for other locations.
This year we’re seeking additional volunteers to help conduct the once-monthly surveys of the shoreline area of Lake Winnisquam near where they live to identify and locate invasive species. Early detection enables us to more easily manage invasive weed growths and prevent them from spreading. If you cannot attend the training class but are interested in becoming a weed watcher we’ll make arrangements to provide the training materials to you.
